Avoiding detection from modern reconnaissance equipment

Concealment is as important in rapid expeditions as Attack. Armed forces have to hide themselves from the enemy’s eye to escape annihilation. Reconnaissance equipment has become more advanced, making it even more difficult for men in arms to hide themselves in their army shelters, mobile and static military shelters.

In today’s scenario, when a lot of money is spent in fighting wars, it is sound battlefield economics to invest in camouflage equipments to protect the personnel and expensive military equipment. When it is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid detection, our camouflage equipment makes it hard for any kind of reconnaissance to detect the protected hardware.


Advances in electronics and optronics have led to the development of high-precision surveillance and weapon systems for target acquisition and attacking respectively, with precision owing to the target’s optical contrast, temperature and radar characteristics.

Intensive tactical and strategic reconnaissance techniques are a common feature of modern-day military and the gap between detection and strike is growing smaller. Latest detection equipment is indifferent to fog, smoke, vegetation, darkness and conventional camouflage.

Camouflaging is a method of crypsis. It allows an otherwise detectable object to remain unnoticed, by blending with its environment. The Camouflage Net Systems are the form of concealment whose main function is to degrade or reduce the performance of hostile surveillance and acquisition devices. These could be achieved by

i.)Reducing target detection probability by imparting to the target a surface finish, both in the optical and textural senses, which more closely matches the appearance of the targets surroundings.

ii.) Reducing target recognition and identification probabilities by providing a pre-garnished camouflage net around the target and by altering the shape of the target.

Properly Camouflaged Military targets are generally less prone to enemy attack either immediately or at a later time because of incorrect assessment.

The conventional methods of camouflage are now the items of history books. This is because of an evolving need on the part of the Defense Forces to camouflage such vital assets as Air-crafts, Helicopters, Hangers, Tactical Ground Vehicles, Missile Boats and even large command post tents. The fact is that today’s prevailing methods/materials of camouflaging cannot adequately cater to the needs, mainly because they cannot be imparted the protective coatings to provide concealment against the latest surveillance devices.

Most of the conventional camouflage is made up of Hemp Twine and Hessian scrim garnishing which suffers from the following draw backs

i. Heavy and cumbersome to work with under battle field conditions.

ii. Absorbs more than 200% water.

iii. Easily attacked by fungus and mildew.

iv. Susceptible to fire.

v. Poor color fastness to weathering.

vi. Very short life.

vii. Provides camouflage only against visual detection.


With a view to overcome the draw-backs of conventional camouflaging equipments and techniques, a complete camouflaging system has been developed to cater for present day defense requirements.

The present synthetic pregarnished MSCN (Multispectral Camouflage Net) System with super structure possesses the following properties:



Color combination: Matching the terrain.

Reversibility of net: Different color combination on both sides of net to cater for variable terrains.

Pattern: Incised design pattern simulating with the terrain.

Gloss: Matt surface with no risk of light reflection.

Combustibility: Self-extinguishing.

Weight: Less than 350 gsm.

Resistance to heat and cold: Withstands temperatures from -20 to + 70 degrees Celsius

Resistance to Microorganisms: Resistant to damage from microorganisms.

Resistance to moisture and water: Resistant to damage from moisture and does not absorb water.

Visual and IR Reflectance: The net possess light reflecting properties of visual and near IR range i.e. 400-1100 nm matching the surrounding terrain.

Thermal blanket: Screens hot targets from thermal surveillance in the wave length bands from 3000-5000 nm & 8000-14000 nm.

Radar attenuation: Approx. 12 dB i.e. 90%, which corresponds to the echo from surrounding terrain.
